Player profile

Jakub Mensik: a Masters champion with a top-12 ceiling already reached

Jakub Mensik converted teenage promise into elite results unusually quickly. The 1.96-metre Czech reached junior No. 2 and the 2022 Australian Open boys' final, then won a Challenger title in Prague as a No. 333-ranked wildcard. His first ATP final came in Doha in 2024. A year later he defeated Novak Djokovic 7-6, 7-6 to win Miami, becoming the fourth man to make a Masters 1000 trophy his first tour title. Mensik added Auckland in 2026 and rose to a career-high No. 12 after beating Jannik Sinner en route to the Doha semifinals.

US Open story

Jakub Mensik US Open history: back-to-back third rounds before age nineteen

New York introduced Mensik to tour-level tennis in 2023. He qualified, won two five-set matches and reached the third round, becoming the youngest man to go that far at a major since Rafael Nadal in 2004 and the youngest at the US Open since 1990. Taylor Fritz beat him on his eighteenth birthday. Mensik returned to round three in 2024 after erasing a two-set deficit against Tristan Schoolkate, then held three match points before losing to Nuno Borges. His 2025 run ended in round two, giving him a 5-3 US Open record before 2026.

What to watch

Jakub Mensik fan watch: a towering serve and unusual tiebreak composure

Mensik's 1.96-metre frame supplies easy pace and steep serving angles, but his Miami title showed that pressure management is the more interesting weapon. He beat Djokovic in two tiebreaks and repeatedly trusted the serve when points became compressed. Watch how the first delivery sets up a flat forehand from inside the baseline. On return, he does not need to win every exchange; one firm block can put his reach and power into play. The 2024 New York loss after three match points is also relevant, a reminder that closing best-of-five matches requires patience beyond the first opening.
