Player profile

Tommy Paul joined the Top 10 after turning athletic defense into all-surface titles

Tommy Paul reached his first major semifinal at the 2023 Australian Open, then produced a 45-win 2024 season with titles in Dallas, Queen's Club and Stockholm. An Australian Open quarterfinal carried him into the Top 10 in January 2025, and he rose to a career-high No. 8 that June after becoming the first American man since Andre Agassi in 2003 to reach the Australian Open and Roland Garros quarterfinals in one season. In 2026 Paul saved three championship points to win Houston, completing a set of ATP Tour titles on hard, grass and clay courts.

US Open story

Tommy Paul returns to the US Open in mixed doubles with Emma Navarro

Paul's best New York singles runs reached the fourth round in 2023 and 2024. The latter ended against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who won two tiebreaks before pulling away 7-6(3), 7-6(5), 6-1. Paul returned to the third round in 2025. His first listed 2026 US Open match is mixed doubles, where he and Emma Navarro received a wild card and are scheduled to face Amanda Anisimova and Learner Tien. The round-one match has not started, so the new American team has no result yet.

What to watch

Tommy Paul's speed and overhead give Navarro a mixed-doubles finisher

The official 2024 Sinner report described Paul as one of tennis's most athletic players, and Paul lists the overhead as his favorite shot. Those details matter more in mixed doubles than his singles ranking. Navarro can work from the baseline while Paul uses quick first steps to protect the middle and finish above the net. Against Anisimova and Tien, watch whether he commits forward after a deep Navarro return or remains caught between formations. Anisimova can redirect pace early and Tien is comfortable changing direction, so an undecided move leaves exactly the middle gap they can target.
