Player profile

Shintaro Mochizuki turned a junior landmark into a Top 100 breakthrough

Shintaro Mochizuki became the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam boys' singles title at Wimbledon in 2019 and briefly reached junior No. 1. On the pro tour, he earned his first ATP win in Tokyo in 2023, then upset world No. 10 Taylor Fritz on the way to the semifinal. Challenger titles in Barletta and Noumea supported his eventual Top 100 breakthrough in 2025. Mochizuki is five-foot-nine and relies on speed, placement and changes of shape rather than simple height-based power; his junior record and senior upset history both reward that variety.

US Open story

Shintaro Mochizuki starts 2026 qualifying after a 2025 New York breakthrough

Mochizuki won three qualifying matches in 2025 to reach his first US Open main draw. He then beat Hugo Gaston in straight sets for his first New York main-draw victory before No. 8 seed Alex de Minaur won their second-round match 6-2, 6-4, 6-2. The Japanese player returns to qualifying in 2026 and is scheduled to meet American Daniel Milavsky in round one. That match has no score yet. His previous second-round finish belongs to the 2025 main draw and should not be confused with this year's three-round qualifying task.

What to watch

Shintaro Mochizuki can make Milavsky defend more than the baseline

A 2025 US Open clip captured Mochizuki winning a set point against Jurij Rodionov with a running drop shot, an ideal snapshot of his court sense. His Tokyo upset of Fritz also showed that the smaller player can redirect a much bigger first strike when his feet arrive early. Against Milavsky, the viewing lens is variety: depth to prevent the American stepping in, followed by the short angle or drop shot once space opens. Mochizuki's route through qualifying last year was not built on overpowering opponents; it was built on making them cover a different court on consecutive balls.
