Player profile

Francesco Passaro: Perugia roots, clay-court growth and a top-100 breakthrough

Francesco Passaro began playing at six in Perugia and has worked with coach Roberto Tarpani since age ten. His progress accelerated in 2022, when he rose from outside the top 500 to the Next Gen ATP Finals. Eight of his first nine Challenger finals came on Italian clay, including titles in Trieste, Turin and Genoa. Passaro then entered the top 100 in January 2025 and peaked at No. 89. As an Australian Open lucky loser that year, he recorded his first Grand Slam main-draw win when Grigor Dimitrov retired.

US Open story

Francesco Passaro at the US Open: from qualifying attempts to a 2025 main draw

Passaro's official US Open history records his first men's singles main-draw appearance in 2025, when he exited in the opening round. That result followed earlier qualifying visits, including the 2024 draw, and gave him a New York milestone separate from his stronger clay-court résumé. His ATP biography lists New York as his favorite city on tour, but the court still demands a surface adjustment. In 2026 he returns through qualifying, where the three-round route and current match result determine whether a second main-draw appearance is added.

What to watch

Francesco Passaro fan watch: the drop shot inside a clay-built game

Passaro names the drop shot as his favorite stroke, an unusually specific clue for watching him. On clay, he can create that play with height, patience and an opponent positioned well behind the baseline. New York hard courts offer less preparation time, so the disguise matters more than the number of drop shots attempted. Watch whether Passaro first pushes his opponent deep with the forehand and whether he follows a short ball forward. A drop shot struck from a neutral or defensive position is far easier to chase down.
