Player profile

Himeno Sakatsume: a Takasaki title followed by a Grand Slam debut

Himeno Sakatsume has advanced through the Japanese ITF calendar into regular WTA 125 fields. Her first tour-level main-draw win came at Osaka in 2025, where she defeated Alexandra Eala 6-0, 6-3. Weeks later Sakatsume won the biggest title of her career at W100 Takasaki, helping her finish the season inside the top 180. She carried that momentum into 2026 Australian Open qualifying, recovered to beat Marina Bassols Ribera in three sets in the final round and made her first Grand Slam main draw. By July she had reached a career-high No. 121.

US Open story

Himeno Sakatsume US Open 2026: turning a previous qualifying run into a debut bid

Sakatsume has not yet appeared in the US Open women's singles main draw. Her published WTA Grand Slam results show no senior New York main-draw appearance before the 2026 tournament. She did reach the final qualifying round in an earlier visit, making this different from a first exposure to the site. The Australian Open breakthrough proved she can complete a three-round qualifying path. Repeating that result in Queens would give her a second major main draw and her first US Open women's singles appearance.

What to watch

Himeno Sakatsume fan watch: hard-court repetition and a compact reply

Sakatsume's 2026 results are strongest on hard courts, the same broad surface family as her Takasaki title and Australian Open qualification. Watch her first two return shots rather than waiting for a spectacular winner. A compact reply through the middle can remove an opponent's angle and let her establish the baseline. The right-handed forehand is most effective when she receives time to set her feet; short depth can invite a taller hitter forward. Her Melbourne qualifying comeback also matters tactically: she stayed organized after losing the opening set instead of trying to shorten every exchange.
