Player profile
Tyra Caterina Grant was born in Rome to an Italian tennis-coach mother and an American former basketball player, then trained at the Piatti Tennis Center from childhood. She represented the United States as a junior before choosing Italy in 2025. Her junior résumé includes three Grand Slam girls' doubles titles: Roland Garros in 2023 with Clervie Ngounoue, then the 2024 Australian Open and Wimbledon with Iva Jovic. After a shoulder injury delayed her start to 2026, Grant won her first WTA main-draw match in Madrid, added a home win in Rome, captured the W75 Kosice title and reached the Foggia WTA 125 final.

US Open story
Grant's 2024 US Open was unusually busy for a sixteen-year-old. She lost to Hailey Baptiste in the first round of women's qualifying, played women's doubles with Iva Jovic and reached the mixed doubles quarterfinals with Aleksandar Kovacevic. She then entered the girls' singles draw as the No. 2 seed, beating Mayu Crossley, Lea Nilsson and Vendula Valdmannova before Mingge Xu edged her in three sets in the quarterfinals. That week matters more than a single result: Grant has already experienced senior pace, junior expectations and multiple formats at the same New York venue before pursuing a first women's singles main-draw appearance.
What to watch
Grant describes tennis as a sport in which the match can turn at any moment, and her 2026 Rome win over Lisa Pigato illustrated that belief. After losing the opening set 6-1, she stopped allowing Pigato to step inside the court, raised her own aggression and won in three. Her heavy forehand is the clearest pressure shot: watch whether she creates enough height and depth to push an opponent back before driving through the next ball. Her junior doubles pedigree adds another layer, because she is comfortable recognizing a short ball and closing rather than treating every rally as a baseline contest.
