Tristan Schoolkate grew up around tennis in Perth, where his father coached and he worked as a ball kid before becoming a hitting partner for touring professionals. The Australian remained in school through his junior career, peaked at No. 28 in the junior rankings and later built his route through the Challenger Tour.
