Player profile

SeongChan Hong built a hard-court career around depth and repetition

SeongChan Hong was the 2015 Australian Open boys' singles runner-up, then won the ITF Junior Masters in 2016 by beating Casper Ruud in the final. His professional breakthrough came with a first Challenger title in Matsuyama in 2022. Hong later qualified for his first ATP Masters 1000 main draw at Indian Wells in 2024 and climbed as high as No. 139. The five-foot-nine Korean is not a pure power player: scouting and interview material describe a position well behind the baseline, deep groundstrokes and a varied first serve, with hard court listed as his preferred surface.

US Open story

SeongChan Hong again tries to turn US Open qualifying into a main-draw debut

Hong has repeatedly reached the middle of the New York qualifying bracket without yet appearing in the singles main draw. In 2023, Taro Daniel beat him 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 in qualifying round two. One year later Hong edged No. 14 qualifying seed Jozef Kovalik 6-4, 6-7(6), 7-5, then lost 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to Kyrian Jacquet in round two. His 2026 first-round opponent is Nikoloz Basilashvili. The match is scheduled and has no result, so Hong remains at the start of a three-win qualifying route rather than in the main draw.

What to watch

SeongChan Hong must manage the space behind his baseline against Basilashvili

Hong has explained that opponents use the drop shot because he operates well behind the baseline; Coleman Wong surprised him with that pattern at the 2024 Busan Challenger. Hong answered by attacking Wong's second serve more aggressively. That is a concrete lens for the Basilashvili qualifier. Hong's depth and kick second serve can extend rallies, but his court position can also open the forecourt when the Georgian changes direction or takes pace early. The key is whether Hong can move forward on a short ball instead of allowing his preferred defensive depth to become exploitable space.
