Player profile
Moyuka Uchijima turned a 19-match run into a WTA 1000 breakthrough
Moyuka Uchijima grew up on Japanese hard and artificial-grass courts before learning clay later in her career. The adjustment clicked in 2024: three ITF titles and Roland Garros qualifying formed a 19-match winning streak that put her inside the Top 100. A year later in Madrid, Uchijima scored her first three Top 25 wins, including a 6-3, 6-2 victory over world No. 3 Jessica Pegula, and reached her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal. She followed with WTA 125 titles in Saint-Malo and Antalya in 2026.

US Open story
Moyuka Uchijima has reached the US Open second round in both appearances
Uchijima won a round on her 2024 US Open debut and repeated the result in 2025. Last year's opener was especially tight: she beat Olga Danilovic 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, taking the deciding match tiebreak 11-9, before Barbora Krejcikova won their second-round meeting 6-4, 6-2. Uchijima is back in qualifying in 2026 and is scheduled to face Polona Hercog in round one. That match has not begun, so a third main-draw appearance is not yet secured.
What to watch
Moyuka Uchijima's surface education makes the Hercog qualifier worth reading point by point
Uchijima told the WTA that she learned tennis on hard and artificial grass, then discovered that clay suited her game as she became more comfortable constructing points. New York returns her to the hard-court foundation, while her 2025 Danilovic win shows she can live with a match decided by the smallest margin: 11-9 in the final tiebreak. Against Hercog, note whether Uchijima dictates early or uses the patience developed on clay before accelerating. That surface blend is specific to her path and more revealing than assuming Madrid form automatically transfers.
