Polona Hercog pairs three clay titles with a career-high No. 35 ranking
Polona Hercog won back-to-back WTA titles in Bastad in 2011 and 2012, then ended a seven-year trophy wait by defeating Iga Swiatek in the 2019 Lugano final. All three titles came on clay, the surface on which she learned the game and built her most natural patterns. The Slovenian nevertheless reached No. 35 and produced third-round results at three different majors. At six feet tall, she combines a substantial first serve with a forehand she names as her favorite shot, plus changes of pace that keep her tennis from becoming one-dimensional.
