Dimitrov's defining New York run came in 2019, when he arrived after losing seven of eight matches and ranked No. 78. In the quarterfinal he recovered from two sets to one down to defeat Roger Federer 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2—his first win over Federer in eight meetings. Daniil Medvedev stopped him in the semifinal. Dimitrov later returned to the quarterfinals in 2024, adding to fourth-round appearances in 2014 and 2016. He missed 2025 through injury before reappearing in the 2026 listing.
