Valentin Vacherot: Monaco's record-setting Masters champion with a college foundation

Valentin Vacherot played at Texas A&M alongside his cousin Arthur Rinderknech before building a professional career through Futures and Challengers. In 2025 he entered Shanghai qualifying as an alternate ranked No. 204, won nine matches and defeated Holger Rune, Novak Djokovic and Rinderknech to become the lowest-ranked ATP Masters 1000 champion. The run also made him Monaco's first ATP singles champion and earned the ATP Breakthrough of the Year award. Vacherot carried that level into 2026, becoming the first home player in the Open Era to reach the Monte-Carlo quarterfinals and semifinals and setting a new ranking high for a Monegasque player.

US Open story

Valentin Vacherot US Open context: a 2024 qualifying win interrupted by injury

Vacherot's first recorded New York win came in the 2024 men's qualifying draw against American wild card Kaylan Bigun. He advanced to the second round but retired there, part of a shoulder problem that curtailed the second half of his season. He did not establish a US Open main-draw record before his later Shanghai breakthrough transformed his standing on tour. That history makes his New York profile different from his Masters résumé: the hard-court credentials are obvious, but Flushing Meadows still asks him to create a senior main-draw chapter rather than rely on achievements earned in China, Monaco or at Roland Garros.

What to watch

Valentin Vacherot fan watch: a big serve supporting calm, structured aggression

At 1.93 metres, Vacherot owns the serve needed to begin a point in control, but Shanghai showed that his game is more than free points. He repeatedly stayed composed after losing opening sets, used the first forehand to move opponents and defended well enough to earn a second attack. Watch his court position after the return: when he holds near the baseline, he can redirect pace and keep a server from owning the next ball. His college background and late breakthrough also matter in tight moments; he is accustomed to problem-solving through long matches rather than treating one lost service game as the end of the plan.
