Tatjana Maria built a late-career peak one slice at a time
Tatjana Maria reached the 2022 Wimbledon semifinals shortly after returning from maternity leave following the birth of her second daughter. She has won four WTA singles titles, including back-to-back Bogota trophies and a remarkable first WTA 500 crown at Queen's Club in 2025. At 37, Maria defeated four Top 15 opponents there—Karolina Muchova, Elena Rybakina, Madison Keys and Amanda Anisimova—to become the oldest WTA 500 champion. Her game is unmistakable: she changed to a one-handed backhand after her first maternity leave and uses slice from both wings to disrupt pace.
