Player profile

Toby Samuel carried an elite college record into a rapid Challenger rise

Toby Samuel left South Carolina with 100 college singles wins, two singles All-America honors and a doubles All-America honor. In 2024 he became the first Gamecock to finish an SEC season unbeaten, going 10-0 in conference play. His professional jump accelerated in 2026: Samuel won three titles in three weeks at Vale do Lobo and the two Hersonissos Challengers, losing only one of 31 sets across that run. He then qualified for his first Grand Slam main draw at Roland Garros by beating Martin Damm, former world No. 7 David Goffin and Gonzalo Bueno.

US Open story

Toby Samuel recovered from a tiebreak loss in his first US Open qualifier

Samuel entered the 2026 US Open without a previous senior appearance in New York. Francesco Maestrelli took their opening qualifying set in a tiebreak, but the Briton reversed the match to win 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-1. That completed result puts Samuel in the second round against fellow Briton Billy Harris. The next match is scheduled and has no score. Samuel is therefore two wins from the main draw; the distinction matters because his Roland Garros qualification earlier this season does not transfer into an automatic US Open place.

What to watch

Toby Samuel's response after the tiebreak is the clue for Billy Harris

The Maestrelli score describes more than a comeback. After losing a close opening set, Samuel conceded only four games across the next two, turning a serve-led contest into a one-sided finish. His college record supplies a matching pressure reference: 14 ranked wins and a perfect 10-0 SEC season in his final spring. Against Harris, watch Samuel's second-serve return and the first four games after any setback. His best recent stretches have come when one lost set does not alter his court position; that composure, rather than the nationality shared by both players, is the practical second-round story.
