Player profile

Stefano Napolitano rebuilt from back surgery to reach Slam qualifying again

Stefano Napolitano won Challenger titles in Bengaluru and Madrid in 2024, then reached a career-high No. 121 after making the Rome Masters third round with victories over J.J. Wolf and Juncheng Shang. A back problem and surgery interrupted that rise. In 2026, the six-foot-five Italian returned to Challenger finals in Kigali and Mexico City while working back toward major qualifying range. Napolitano prefers hard courts and names the backhand as his favorite shot; his height and early acceleration on serve and return give that preference a practical foundation.

US Open story

Stefano Napolitano remains outside the US Open main draw after a close qualifier

Napolitano has played New York qualifying several times but has not reached the men's main draw. In 2024 he beat Yannick Hanfmann 6-2, 6-1 before Maks Kasnikowski stopped him 7-5, 6-4 in round two. Marc-Andrea Huesler ended his 2025 attempt in the opening round. The 2026 result was another first-round exit: Mackenzie McDonald defeated Napolitano 6-4, 7-5. Because the match is complete, the Italian will not play qualifying round two and cannot add a main-draw appearance this year.

What to watch

Stefano Napolitano needed his backhand to create more return pressure

Napolitano calls the backhand his favorite shot and grew up on fast courts, while his six-foot-five frame can produce the short return that lets him strike it early. Against McDonald, however, a 6-4, 7-5 score meant the American stayed in front at the end of both sets. Compare that with Napolitano's 2024 qualifying win over Hanfmann, when he conceded only three games. The difference for a viewer is sustained return position: when Napolitano blocks the first serve deep, his backhand can take over; when the return sits short, his height offers little protection in the next exchange.
