Mai Hontama's Osaka semifinal marked her move onto the WTA stage
Mai Hontama first reached a WTA semifinal at Osaka in 2023, a home-country run that stands out in a career built largely through qualifying and ITF events. She had already made her Grand Slam main-draw breakthrough at Wimbledon in 2022, and she added an Australian Open main-draw appearance in 2024 before reaching a career-high No. 105 that August. The Japanese right-hander began playing at four and lists hard court as her favorite surface. She also owns a WTA doubles final from Monastir in 2023 with Natalija Stevanovic.
