Player profile
Kei Nishikori: Japan's highest-ranked man and a twelve-title tour pioneer
Kei Nishikori became the first Asian man to reach a Grand Slam singles final and the first Japanese man to rise to world No. 4. He owns twelve ATP titles, beginning with a remarkable 2008 Delray Beach victory as an eighteen-year-old qualifier, and won the 2016 Rio Olympic bronze medal. Nishikori also qualified for the ATP Finals four times and reached two semifinals there. Hip, wrist and ankle problems repeatedly interrupted later seasons, yet he returned without a ranking to win the 2023 Palmas del Mar Challenger. In April 2026, Nishikori announced that this would be his final professional season.

US Open story
Kei Nishikori US Open legacy: 2014 finalist and three-time semifinalist
Nishikori's career-defining major run came at the 2014 US Open. He defeated Milos Raonic and Stan Wawrinka in consecutive five-set matches, then upset world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in four sets to become the first Asian men's Grand Slam finalist. Marin Cilic won the final 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Nishikori returned to the semifinals in 2016 and 2018, the latter after beating Cilic in a five-set quarterfinal. Across eleven appearances he compiled a 27-11 record, with additional third-round runs in 2010-13, 2019 and 2021. New York is the central major venue of his career.
What to watch
Kei Nishikori fan watch: early backhand contact and elite deciding-set nerve
Nishikori built an elite hard-court career without a towering serve. His return timing and two-handed backhand take time away immediately, especially when he redirects down the line from close to the baseline. Watch his feet before the strike: small adjustment steps let him meet a larger opponent's pace at the ideal height. His historical resilience is measurable as well as memorable; through his retirement announcement, only Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe held better tour-level deciding-set winning percentages. In a final New York campaign, clean early contact matters because it prevents longer physical exchanges from becoming the only route to victory.
