Kayla Day: a US Open junior champion who later broke through in Paris

Kayla Day finished 2016 as the world's leading junior after an exceptional US Open. The American left-hander won the girls' singles title, reached the girls' doubles final and also earned her first senior Grand Slam victory. Her professional climb took longer, but a 41-21 season in 2022 and two ITF titles restored momentum. In 2023 she qualified for Roland Garros, reached the third round and entered the WTA top 100 for the first time, later peaking at No. 84. Day's strongest major result and highest ranking therefore arrived seven years after her celebrated junior New York fortnight.

Kayla Day US Open story: 2016 junior champion and women's second-round player

Day earned a 2016 women's wildcard by winning the USTA Girls' 18s national title. At sixteen she defeated Madison Brengle for her first professional Grand Slam win, then lost to No. 8 seed Madison Keys in round two. She completed the fortnight by beating Viktoria Kuzmova 6-3, 6-2 for the girls' singles crown and finishing runner-up in girls' doubles with Caroline Dolehide. Day returned to the women's main draw in 2017 and 2023 but lost in round one both times. Her senior best remains round two, while the junior championship is a separate title.
