Player profile
Hugo Dellien: Bolivia's clay-court standard-bearer
Hugo Dellien became the leading Bolivian men's player of his generation. A former junior No. 2, he broke into the top 100 in 2018 after becoming Bolivia's first Challenger champion since 1983 and later reached a career-high No. 64. Dellien made more national history in 2019 as the first Bolivian in 35 years to win a Grand Slam match. His best surface is clay, where fifteen Challenger final wins and a 2023 Córdoba semifinal anchor his résumé. In 2026 he defeated Juan Carlos Prado Angelo in the first all-Bolivian Challenger final, staged in Santa Cruz.

US Open story
Hugo Dellien US Open history: a debut win that broke his hard-court barrier
Dellien's best US Open came on debut in 2019. Before arriving in New York, he had never played a tour-level hard-court main-draw match; he then beat Soonwoo Kwon to reach round two. Daniil Medvedev stopped him 6-3, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3, but Dellien took a set from the eventual finalist during a physically demanding Grandstand match. His later main-draw appearances in 2020, 2023 and 2025 ended in the first round. The 2019 second round therefore remains both his New York high and a striking exception within a career built primarily on clay.
What to watch
Hugo Dellien fan watch: clay-court forehand weight against New York speed
Dellien prefers clay and is comfortable building a point through repeated heavy forehands and persistent movement. The New York court forces that pattern to start sooner. Watch whether he can keep the return deep enough to avoid defending immediately and whether he steps around the backhand without exposing too much open court. His 2019 debut showed the adjustment is possible: he won his first tour-level hard-court main-draw match and later took a set from Medvedev. Success comes when his topspin pushes a hitter back; short balls allow the faster surface to work against him.
