Taro Daniel owns a tour title and victories over Djokovic and Murray
Taro Daniel became the second Japanese man of the Open Era to win an ATP clay-court title when he lifted the 2018 Istanbul trophy. That season also produced a defining upset: as a qualifier at Indian Wells, he defeated five-time champion Novak Djokovic. Daniel later beat Andy Murray at the 2022 Australian Open and reached his second ATP final in Auckland in 2024, rising to a career-high No. 58. Born in New York and developed partly in Valencia, he blends patient baseline construction with the willingness to use a drop shot or finish forward when space appears.
