Player profile

Stefanos Sakellaridis converted an unlikely ATP debut into a Challenger rise

Stefanos Sakellaridis arrived at the 2023 United Cup ranked No. 803 and had never played a Challenger match. Called into the Greek team after an injury, the 18-year-old defeated No. 129 Zizou Bergs 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 on his ATP debut. He later built a full professional schedule and won his first Challenger title in New Delhi in 2026, beating Oliver Crawford in a deciding tiebreak. The six-foot-six right-hander has since climbed into the Top 150. His sister Sapfo also plays professionally, and both represented Greece at that breakthrough United Cup.

US Open story

Stefanos Sakellaridis begins his New York route against Christopher O'Connell

Sakellaridis enters the 2026 US Open qualifying draw without a previous men's main-draw appearance in New York. His first-round match against Christopher O'Connell is scheduled and has no score or winner. The Greek therefore needs three victories before his name can move into the field of 128. This is distinct from his 2026 Roland Garros qualifying run, where he beat Sho Shimabukuro in three sets, and from his Challenger results. Until the O'Connell match is played, his US Open record remains a qualifying entry rather than a completed main-draw debut.

What to watch

Stefanos Sakellaridis can make his six-foot-six serve define the O'Connell match

ATP data identifies the obvious first tactical marker: Sakellaridis stands six-foot-six and has won roughly seven of every ten first-serve points in recorded tour matches. His United Cup upset of Bergs showed the second requirement—he recovered after losing the first set instead of relying on a quick start. Against O'Connell, watch the first ball after the serve. A high contact point only creates an advantage if Sakellaridis moves forward and directs that next groundstroke; if the rally resets to neutral, the Australian has time to test the taller player through repeated changes of direction.
