Player profile

Nao Hibino has collected three WTA singles titles across eight seasons

Nao Hibino won WTA singles titles in Tashkent in 2015, Hiroshima in 2019 and Prague in 2023, alongside runner-up finishes in three other finals. The Prague title was particularly unusual because she entered the main draw as a lucky loser and also won the doubles trophy with Oksana Kalashnikova. Hibino reached a career-high No. 56 and has three doubles titles as well. Tennis runs through her family: she was named for former Japanese Top 20 player Naoko Sawamatsu, while her brother was named for Shuzo Matsuoka.

US Open story

Nao Hibino's first Grand Slam match win came in New York

Hibino's best US Open result is the 2017 second round. She earned her first Grand Slam main-draw victory by rallying past American CiCi Bellis 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, winning the final four games after Bellis served for the match. In 2020, Hibino led Garbine Muguruza 4-1 in Louis Armstrong Stadium before the former No. 1 recovered to win 6-4, 6-4. Hibino's 2026 campaign begins in qualifying, with a scheduled first-round match against Australian Janae Preston.

What to watch

Nao Hibino's flat ball and court speed shape the Preston matchup

A WTA match report noted that Hibino likes to play a flat ball, while the US Open described her speeding around the court and playing nearly error-free during her 4-1 start against Muguruza. Those are concrete cues against Preston: look for Hibino taking time away with flatter drives, then using her movement to hold the baseline when the first attack comes back. Her 2017 escape against Bellis also shows why the late score matters—Hibino won four straight games after her opponent served for the match. The 2026 qualifier itself remains unplayed.
