Lloyd Harris: a top-40 South African rebuilding after wrist and back surgery
Lloyd Harris reached No. 31 in 2021 after becoming South Africa's leading men's player, defeating Rafael Nadal in Washington and reaching his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. His career then required two major recoveries. A torn triangular fibrocartilage complex led to right-wrist surgery in 2022; a herniated L4/L5 disc required back surgery in 2024. Between those setbacks, Harris won three Challenger titles in a 2024 surge, including his first grass trophy at Surbiton. The Cape Town right-hander returned after a seven-month layoff in 2025 and qualified at both Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Harris produced his best major run at the 2021 US Open. Unseeded in New York, he defeated No. 25 Karen Khachanov, No. 7 Denis Shapovalov and No. 22 Reilly Opelka; the Opelka win came 6-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 and sent Harris to his first major quarterfinal. Olympic champion Alexander Zverev ended the run in straight sets. Harris has also reached the US Open second round in 2020, 2023 and 2025. The 2025 visit was especially meaningful because it followed back surgery and required him to qualify before beating Sebastian Baez in round one.
