Leyre Romero Gormaz: a Foggia champion with a left-handed clay-court résumé

Leyre Romero Gormaz built her ranking almost entirely on clay. The Spanish left-hander won six ITF titles across 2021 and 2022, added a W75 crown in Caserta in 2024 and reached two Antalya WTA 125 finals in 2025. That season also brought her first WTA quarterfinal in Hamburg and a Grand Slam breakthrough at Roland Garros, where she qualified and won a main-draw round. Romero Gormaz captured her first WTA 125 singles title in Foggia in 2026 and reached a career-high No. 123. She also owns four WTA 125 doubles titles with different partners.

US Open story

Leyre Romero Gormaz US Open 2026: seeking a first New York main draw

Romero Gormaz played qualifying at all four Grand Slams for the first time in 2023 but did not reach the US Open main draw. Her successful major route came at Roland Garros in 2025, where she qualified and advanced to round two. The official New York record still shows no women's main-draw appearance before 2026. Three hard-court qualifying wins would change that and give her a second different Grand Slam main draw. Her 2025 Paris success proves the process is possible, but New York's quicker surface presents a separate tactical problem from the clay events behind her ranking.

What to watch

Leyre Romero Gormaz fan watch: left-handed clay angles and a disguised drop shot

Romero Gormaz uses left-handed spin and has shown particular comfort changing pace with the drop shot, a pattern highlighted during her Hamburg quarterfinal run. Watch where she stands before using it. From on or inside the baseline, the disguise can pull an opponent forward after a heavy crosscourt exchange; from too far back, the ball travels longer and becomes easier to read. Hard courts also reward a firmer first return than clay. If she lands that reply deep, the left-handed forehand angle opens naturally and lets her create the short ball needed for her favorite variation.
