Laura Pigossi: Brazil's historic Olympic medalist and a Pan American double champion

Laura Pigossi and Luisa Stefani won Brazil's first Olympic tennis medal at Tokyo 2020. Entering late and with little tour-level doubles experience, they saved four match points from 9-5 down in the bronze-medal tiebreak and defeated Elena Vesnina and Veronika Kudermetova 4-6, 6-4, 11-9. Pigossi later won both singles and doubles gold at the 2023 Pan American Games, securing a place at the Paris Olympics. In singles, the Sao Paulo right-hander reached the 2022 Bogota final, broke into the top 100 and won her first WTA 125 title in Buenos Aires in 2023.

Laura Pigossi US Open 2026: qualifying for a first New York main draw

Pigossi has competed in Grand Slam qualifying but the official US Open and WTA records show no women's singles main-draw appearance in New York before 2026. Her major main-draw experience came elsewhere, and her Olympic medal belongs to doubles, so neither creates a US Open singles result. The current qualifying field requires three wins for a debut in the 128-player championship draw. For a player whose largest achievements came through comeback pressure, that route is familiar in spirit but new in setting. Completing it would add New York to a career already marked by historic Brazilian firsts.

What to watch

Laura Pigossi fan watch: competitive defense shaped by match-tiebreak survival

Pigossi is 1.64 metres tall and cannot rely on free points from height, so her game is built around movement, return depth and refusing to concede the next ball. The Olympic bronze match is the clearest example: she and Stefani won six straight points after falling behind 9-5. In singles, watch whether Pigossi keeps enough court position while defending. A deep neutral ball lets her reset and use the opponent's pace; a short reply leaves too much space to cover. Her clay success rewards endurance, while New York demands the same competitive discipline with less recovery time between strikes.
