Player profile

Laslo Djere: three clay titles and a career defined by resolve

Laslo Djere entered the top 30 after winning the 2019 Rio de Janeiro title without losing a set, then dedicated the trophy to his parents, who both died from cancer. The Serbian added titles in Sardinia in 2020 and Santiago in 2025, all on outdoor clay, and reached a career-high No. 27. His hard-court résumé contains striking exceptions to that clay identity: a 2022 Winston-Salem final built on five consecutive tiebreak wins and a victory over world No. 3 Casper Ruud in Auckland. Djere speaks Serbian, Hungarian and English and names the forehand as his favorite shot.

US Open story

Laslo Djere US Open history: two-set lead over Djokovic in a 2023 third round

Djere reached his best US Open result in 2023, beating Brandon Nakashima and Hugo Gaston without dropping a set. Against Novak Djokovic in round three, Djere won the first two sets 6-4, 6-4 before the eventual champion recovered 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in a match ending after 1:30 a.m. The Serbian pair met again in the 2024 second round, where Djere pushed the defending champion before retiring in the third set. Across seven appearances, Djere also reached round two in 2018. The 2023 third round remains his main New York benchmark.

What to watch

Laslo Djere fan watch: a clay forehand with proven hard-court tiebreak nerve

Djere prefers clay and looks to dictate with a heavy forehand, often moving around the backhand corner once he has earned a shorter ball. The quicker New York bounce asks him to prepare earlier and protect the exposed line. His Winston-Salem run is the useful hard-court counterexample: five tiebreak wins in one tournament showed that he can serve accurately and stay composed when points shorten. Against Djokovic in 2023, clean first strikes carried two full sets. Watch whether the forehand continues landing deep after long rallies, because dropping its length allows elite defenders to reverse the direction immediately.
