Player profile

Gustavo Heide: Brazilian clay-court progress from Davis Cup to the majors

Gustavo Heide began tennis at four because his parents played and developed into a Brazilian clay-court specialist. He earned his first ranking point at sixteen, then broke into the top 200 after defeating João Fonseca for his first Challenger title in Asunción in 2024. Heide had already won his tour-level debut for Brazil in 2023 Davis Cup play against China. Later in 2024 he qualified for Roland Garros to make his Grand Slam main-draw debut. A former top-20 junior, he lists clay, the Rio Open and Rio de Janeiro among his tour favorites.

US Open story

Gustavo Heide US Open 2026: converting clay success into a New York debut

Heide's official US Open profile lists no previous main-draw appearance and no archived senior New York result before 2026. His major experience instead began at Roland Garros, where he qualified in 2024 on his preferred clay. The US Open qualifying draw asks a different question. At 1.91 metres he has enough size to benefit from the faster court, but the entire three-round route is new in New York. Reaching this entry reflects his ranking growth; only completed qualifying wins determine whether it becomes his second different Grand Slam main draw.

What to watch

Gustavo Heide fan watch: heavy clay patterns with a taller serve platform

Heide's 1.91-metre frame gives him a useful serve platform, but his tennis education remains rooted in clay. Watch whether the serve produces a forehand he can strike from inside the baseline. When that happens, his topspin can move through the court instead of sitting up. The backhand exchange is another key: a hard-court opponent may attack it earlier than a typical clay rival. Heide needs depth before he can use movement and forehand shape. If returns repeatedly land at his feet, the point can turn defensive before his preferred pattern begins.
